Sovereign Duel
Sovereign Duel is the most prestigious match format in ChessVS — an invite-only public challenge with a live spectator prediction market and a permanent, separate Duel record.
Who can play
To issue or accept a Sovereign Duel, both players must meet all three conditions when the challenge is committed:
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| XP Rank | Champion or Legend |
| ChessVS Rating (ELO) | ≥ 1,400 |
| Verification | On-chain check at match creation |
If either player drops below these thresholds between the challenge and the match start, the challenge is cancelled and all wagers are returned.
Sovereign Duel is a frozen, prestige event name. It does not refer to a player tier — there is no "Sovereign" tier in ChessVS. Eligibility uses your XP Rank and ChessVS Rating above.
How a duel works
-
Challenge issued. An eligible player publicly challenges another, including a proposed CVS wager. The whole community can see it. The challenged player has 48 hours to accept.
-
Wager locked. On acceptance, both players lock matching wagers in escrow (minimum 100 CVS, no maximum). The winner takes the pot minus a small protocol fee.
-
Spectator staking opens. From acceptance through Move 5 of the match, any CVS holder can stake on either player. Winning backers split the losing side's stakes; a small portion is burned. This makes every big duel a live prediction market.
-
Match broadcast. Sovereign Duels are publicly visible in the spectator lobby and archived as highlight reels.
-
Duel ELO updated. Sovereign Duels generate a separate Duel ELO rating, recorded permanently. Your Duel record becomes part of your competitive identity forever.
Duel ELO and Club Champions
The top Duel ELO players each season are recognised as Club Champions, representing their club in the championship standings. Duel ELO never resets — it is one of the few permanent competitive statistics in ChessVS.
Strategic notes
- The wager is public before the match. A large wager from a well-known player draws more spectators and more attention — and more pressure.
- Staking closes at Move 5. A sharp opening can shift the early prediction market.
- One loss is permanent. Because Duel ELO never resets, every Sovereign Duel is a public statement. Choose your challenges carefully.
