Rivalries

A rivalry is the social layer that activates when two players square off against each other again and again. It's one of the most fun systems in ChessVS — and it's built entirely around chess skill, not random matchmaking.

Rivalries launch in Season 3 — Superspeed.

How a rivalry is declared

Rivalries grow out of the Grudge Match Gambit Card. When two players invoke Grudge Match against each other three or more times in a single season, the system automatically declares a rivalry — no action needed from either player.

The moment it triggers, several things happen at once:

  1. A rivalry post appears in the #rivalries Discord channel, naming both players, their clubs, and their head-to-head record.
  2. A community prediction poll opens — players vote on who wins the season.
  3. Both players get a temporary Current Rival Discord role for the rest of the season.
  4. A Rival badge appears on both players' in-game profiles and match lobby cards.
  5. If the two players are from different clubs, the rivalry is cross-posted to both clubs' channels.
  6. Both players join the Season Rivalry Leaderboard.

Rivalry escalation

The system tracks how heated a rivalry gets and posts again at milestones:

Grudge countWhat happens
3Rivalry declared — posted to #rivalries
5"Rivalry Intensifies" — cross-posted to #announcements
7+"Historic Rivalry" — community vote on a season-recap feature

The Season Rivalry Leaderboard

At season close, rivalries are ranked by:

  1. Total grudge count (highest first)
  2. Head-to-head closeness — a 5–5 tie outranks a 5–3 split at the same total

The top rivalry pair of the season is named in the official season recap.

"Settle It" — season-end public matches

Any rivalry where the head-to-head record is tied or within one match at season close is marked Unsettled. Both players are invited to a public Settle It match in the #settle-it Discord channel.

  • Spectator CVS wagering opens and stays open through Move 5.
  • The match is broadcast in the spectator lobby.
  • The result is recorded in the season recap — settling the rivalry for the record.

Why rivalries matter

Rivalries turn ChessVS from a ladder grind into a story. You're not just climbing a number — you're chasing a specific opponent, with a community watching, building toward a public showdown. It's the competitive layer and the social layer fused together.
