The rivalry social layer activates in a later season — it is not yet live in the alpha. This page previews the design.
A rivalry is the social layer that activates when two players square off against each other again and again. It's one of the most fun systems in ChessVS — and it's built entirely around chess skill, not random matchmaking.

How a rivalry is declared
Rivalries grow out of a specific Gambit Card that lets you challenge the same opponent again. When two players keep challenging each other across a season, the system automatically declares a rivalry — no action needed from either player.
The moment it triggers, several things happen at once:
- A rivalry post appears in the the community Discord channel, naming both players, their clubs, and their head-to-head record.
- The community can cheer for a side in a fun, no-stakes poll.
- Both players get a temporary rival role in Discord for the rest of the season.
- A rivalry marker appears on both players' in-game profiles.
- If the two players are from different clubs, the rivalry is cross-posted to both clubs' channels.
- Both players are tracked on a season-long rivalry standings list.
Rivalry escalation
As a rivalry heats up, the community hears about it at a few milestones along the way.

At season close, rivalries are ranked by:
- How many times the pair has faced off
- How close the head-to-head record is
The top rivalry pair of the season is named in the official season recap. The season's top rivalry winner earns a permanent recognition on their profile.
Season-end public matches
Any rivalry that is still close at season close gets a chance to be resolved: both players are invited to a public showcase match, announced in Discord.
- The match is broadcast in the spectator lobby.
- The result is recorded in the season recap — settling the rivalry for the record.
Both players who take part in a public season-end match earn a permanent recognition on their profile.
Why rivalries matter
Rivalries turn ChessVS from a ladder grind into a story. You're not just climbing a number — you're chasing a specific opponent, with a community watching, building toward a public showdown. It's the competitive layer and the social layer fused together.
