Gambit Cards

Gambit Cards are the most disruptive cards in ChessVS. They are single-use โ€” played once, then gone โ€” and they can flip a match in a single moment.

The key factsโ€‹

  • Single-use โ€” a Gambit Card is consumed permanently when you play it.
  • One per match โ€” you can activate only one Gambit Card per game, no matter how many you carry.
  • Use them or lose them โ€” any unplayed Gambit Cards are cleared from your collection at season end. There is no carry-over for any rarity.
  • Max 3 in your loadout โ€” of your 10-card loadout, at most 3 may be Gambits.

A Bitcoinia club-locked Gambit can't be played if you're on an Etheryst board.

Grudge Match โ€” the rivalry cardโ€‹

Universal ยท Rare ยท Launches Season 3 (Superspeed)

Grudge Match is special: it doesn't fire during a match โ€” it fires on the results screen afterward.

Effect: After a ranked loss, you can challenge your opponent to an immediate rematch. Both players must have Grudge Match equipped. If they do, the rematch fires with three built-in advantages for the defending player (the one being called back):

  • Wager escalates 1.5ร— โ€” if the original match had a CVS wager, the rematch wager rises to 1.5ร— it.
  • Defender picks colour โ€” the defending player chooses their side, claiming chess's first-move advantage.
  • Charge asymmetry โ€” only the challenging (losing) player spends a Grudge Match charge.

Restrictions:

  • Only the losing player can activate it.
  • 60-second window on the results screen after the match ends.
  • Both players must have it equipped โ€” otherwise the challenge fails silently and your charge is kept.
  • Ranked matches only.
A two-sided decision

Equipping Grudge Match means you can call opponents back after a loss โ€” but they can also call you back after you beat them, at 1.5ร— the wager. Run it carefully.

Repeated Grudge Matches between the same two players are what build a tracked rivalry. (Rivalries โ†’)

Season-end clearanceโ€‹

At the end of every season, all unplayed Gambit Cards are cleared automatically. There is no exception and no appeal. Holding Gambits late into a season is always a use-it-or-lose-it call.
